BJP can't fight us politically so using agencies: Mamata after ED summons Abhishek Banerjee in coal scam case

Kolkata/IBNS: Accusing the saffron party of vindictive politics, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was unable to fight her Trinamool Congress (TMC) politically so using agencies, hours after Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned her nephew Abhishek Banerjee and his wife in a coal scam case.

"They can't fight us politically so using agencies," said Mamata while addressing student leaders on TMC youth wing's foundation day.

"I can also give evidence to the central agencies," said the TMC supremo and added, "I haven't come across such a vindictive party and government."

"During the elections, they (BJP leaders) came to Kolkata and stayed at hotels run by coal mafias," the Chief Minister said.

"Some BJP leaders were involved in cases related to women. I didn't pursue a single case," she added.

The ED has summoned TMC national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, his wife Rujira Naroola Banerjee, and two senior Bengal cadre IPS officials in connection with its ongoing probe into a busted illegal coal mining and smuggling case.

Abhishek's lawyer Sanjay Basu has been summoned by the agency in a multi-crore Pincon ponzi firm case, officials said Saturday afternoon.

According to sources in the ED, the central economic intelligence agency has served notices to Rujira Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee, DIG Midnapore Range IPS Shyam Singh and ADG CID IPS Gyanwant Singh asking them to join the investigation on Sept 1, 3, 8 and 9 respectively.

Abhishek and his wife have been asked to appear at the ED headquarters in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, advocate Sanjay Basu, who is very close to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee, has been asked to appear before ED investigators at CGO Complex in Kolkata on Monday in connection with the chit fund probe.

Before the West Bengal assembly polls, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is also probing the coal scam case, quizzed Rujira and her relatives in connection with the case.
