BJP to field candidates from all 60 seats in Manipur assembly polls

Imphal/IBNS: BJP is fielding candidates from all the 60 seats in the upcoming Manipur elections and 10 of them are Congress MLAs, who joined the party, recently, media reports said.

"BJP will contest all the 60 seats and will get a majority on its own. The Modi government has ensured that Manipur will get a stable government and will continue to ensure the development and peace of the region," BJP's Manipur election in-charge Bhupendra Yadav said.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh will contest the polls from his traditional seat in Heingang while Th. Biswajit Singh, a key minister in his Cabinet, will contest from Thongju seat in Imphal East district. Biswajit Singh is also the sitting MLA of this assembly constituency.

Former national footballer Somatai Saiza will contest from Ukhrul, the list showed.

In 2017, BJP won 21 seats and formed the government with the support of the regional parties.

Of these, 19 MLAs have been given tickets while two have been dropped, reported NDTV, citing sources.

The candidates include three women - Nemcha Kipgen from Kangpokpi, SS Olish from Chandel, and Soraisam Kebi Devi from Naoriyapakhanglakpa, and three former IAS officers - Dinganglung Gangmei from Nungba, Yengkhom Surchandra Singh from Kakching, and Raghumani Singh from Uripok.

The NDA is in majority in Manipur Assembly with 30 BJP MLAs, three MLAs from National People's Party, four Naga People's Front and three independents.
