BMC polls result : Shiv Sena leads but unsure of clear majority, BJP close behind

Mumbai, Feb 23 (IBNS) : In a tough battle, the Shiv Sena remained a clear leader capturing 92 seats of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), ahead of the main rival BJP, but was still 20 short of the halfway mark of 114 required to rule the civic body with the result of only 20 seats remaining to be announced.

The BJP has so far bagged 75 BMC seats, far surpassing its previous record of 31, while it was a disaster for Congress which is in a distant third position.

The BJP is also doing well in other municipalities in the state.

It has wrested Pune from Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party and is ahead in Solapur, Amravati, Nashik and Nagpur as counting for nine other Maharashtra civic bodies are also underway.

According to media reports, the Sena, which ruled the BMC, country's riches civic body for 20 years, has said it will not take the support of the BJP, its estranged partner.

This leaves speculations open for a post-electoral tie-up between the Sena and its breakaway faction Maharashtra Nirman Sena (MSN), led by Raj Thackeray.

The BMC has 227 seats.

The average voting in the Maharashtra municipal polls held on Tuesday was 56.40 per cent, against 48.59 per cent for the same in 2012.
