Can I direct Putin? CJI Ramana asks petitioner on Ukraine evacuation plea

New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to pass any order on a matter pertaining to evacuation of Indians, especially students, stuck in Romania and other neighbouring nations of Ukraine, which is under attack by Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces.

"What will the court do? Can I give directions to the President of Russia to stop the war?" said Chief Justice NV Ramana.

"Do I ask Vladimir Putin to stop the war? What do you want?" the Chief Justice asked a lawyer, who mentioned the matter before the court seeking an immediate direction to evacuate many students stuck in Romania owing to the Ukrainian crisis.

Lawyer AM Dar replied the apex court could pass an order to evacuate them.

Dar, mentioned the matter before a three-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice.

"The petitioner is stuck near the Romania border along with 30 students," the lawyer submitted before the court.

The court did not pass any order, but the Chief Justice said: "We have all sympathies for them, but what direction can the court give?"
