Cancelled Air India Delhi flight from Italy leaves hundreds stranded ahead of Diwali

Milan (Italy): An Air India flight from Milan to Delhi was cancelled on Friday, stranding hundreds of passengers in Italy just days before Diwali. The airline cited “an extended technical requirement,” noting that the decision prioritised passenger safety.

Flight AI138, scheduled to depart Milan on October 17, could not take off due to the technical issue.

Air India arranged hotel accommodation for all affected passengers, though limited availability meant some were housed away from the airport, India Today reported.

Passengers are being rebooked on flights from October 20 onwards, depending on seat availability with Air India and partner airlines.

In one case, a passenger with a Schengen visa expiring on October 20 was accommodated on another airline’s flight on October 19 to comply with visa requirements, the report said.

Air India said it continues to provide meals and other ground support to passengers. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew,” an airline spokesperson said.

The cancellation disrupted travel plans for many trying to return to India in time for Diwali.
