Kolkata/IBNS: Four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs including chief whip Shankar Ghosh were on Monday suspended by West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay after the opposition lawmakers staged a protest near the well of the house, media reports said.

Apart from Ghosh, the other suspended MLAs are Agnimitra Paul, Dipak Barman and Manoj Kumar Oraon.

The chaos broke out after Ghosh was allegedly denied to speak in the House.

The BJP MLAs started protesting near the well, flung papers on the air.

Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay suspended the four BJP MLAs based on a motion passed by minister Aroop Biswas.

The Speaker had called Marshal to evict the suspended lawmakers and it was then a scuffle broke out.

"We were dragged out of the assembly for asking questions. Questioning the government is our duty because we are elected representatives," said Agnimitra.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who entered the assembly later, claimed Ghosh fell down in the scuffle and got his spectacles broken.

Adhikari led the BJP MLAs to protest against the suspension in the assembly premises.

The BJP MLAs also protested against the Speaker's expungement of opposition lawmakers' remarks allegedly for not attending during the government's version.

Agnimitra said, "How can the opposition lawmakers' remarks be expunged for not listening to the government's version? Where does this law prevail? How is it compulsory to sit and listen to what the government says?"

The chaos broke out in the assembly on a day the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) headed for a sweeping victory in the Kaliganj byelections which were held on June 19.
