Chidambaram gave clean chit to Pakistan: Amit Shah slams Cong leader's 'homegrown terrorists' remark

New Delhi/IBNS: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday slammed Congress leader P Chidambaram who said the Pahalgam terror attackers could be "homegrown terrorists".

Shah also produced evidence that proved the three attackers, who were eliminated on Monday, were Pakistanis.

Speaking during the 'Operation Sindoor' debate in Parliament, Shah cited "voter numbers of two of the three terrorists", "rifles", "chocolate" to prove that the attackers were from Pakistan.

The Home Minister said, "Yesterday, they (Congress) were asking us where the terrorists came from and who is responsible for this. Of course, it is our responsibility because we are in the government.

"I was deeply saddened that yesterday, the former Home Minister of this country, Mr. Chidambaram, raised the question of what evidence there is that these terrorists came from Pakistan. What are they trying to say? Whom are they trying to protect? What will you gain by protecting Pakistan?"

"I want to say through you to Chidambaram-ji today that we have proof that all three were Pakistani. The Pakistani voter numbers of two out of the three are also available with us.

"There are also rifles, and the chocolate found with them is also made in Pakistan. They say they were not Pakistani, which means a former Home Minister of the country is giving a clean chit to Pakistan in front of the whole world," he added.

Triggering a row, Chidambaram, a former Home Minister of the country, in a recent interview said the terrorists could be "homegrown".

Speaking to The Quint, the Congress leader said, "Have they identified the terrorists? Where they came from? I mean, for all we know, they could be homegrown terrorists. Why do you assume that they came from Pakistan? There's no evidence in that." (sic)

However, Chidambaram claimed he was misquoted by trolls.

He posted on X, "Trolls are of different kinds and use different tools to spread misinformation. The worst kind is a troll who suppresses the full recorded interview, takes two sentences, mutes some words, and paints the speaker in a black colour!"

Shah on Tuesday confirmed the three terrorists who were involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack have been eliminated in Operation Mahadev.

Shah provided the details of the operation participating in the 'Operation Sindoor' debate in the Lok Sabha.

The Operation Mahadev was carried out by the Army, CRPF personnel and Jammu and Kashmir Police.

The Home Minister said, "I would like to share the details of Operation Mahadev, which took place yesterday. Three terrorists — Suleiman Shah, a top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, along with Jibran and Hamza Afghani — were successfully eliminated. Suleiman was an ‘A’ category terrorist, deeply involved in the Pahalgam and Gagangir terror attacks.

"Our intelligence agencies have substantial evidence of his role. Both Hamza Afghani and Jibran were also classified as ‘A’ grade terrorists, posing a serious threat to national security."

"On May 22, we received confirmation of the presence of terrorists through sensors. Then, under the leadership of our 4 Para, the CRPF personnel and Jammu Kashmir personnel together carried out the task of surrounding the terrorists," he added.
