Complete lockdown in Guntur, positive cases rise to 405 in Andhra Pradesh

Vijayawada/UNI: Complete lockdown is being enforced in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur city as 56 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported so far.

All main roads and arterial roads were blocked and nobody was being allowed to come out of homes.

Official sources said that except medical shops, all other activities, including supply of milk, selling of vegetables and meat were not allowed on Sunday.

The police did not allow people to perform mass prayers on the occasion of Easter today. The officials were enforcing the lockdown very strictly in Guntur city as 56 cases have been reported in the city itself out of 75 cases in the district.

The vendors would be allowed to sell essential commodities and vegetables in alternative days in Guntur city, official said.

''We will not hesitate to invoke the PD Act against the violators of lockdown as Guntur city is in red zone as highest number of cases have been reported there,'' the official said. 

''As many as 10 members of a family in a house at Kummari Bazar in in the city were infected with the COVID-19 virus, official said. Keeping in view the rapid spread of Coronavirus in the city, the official machinery enforced lockdown in the entire city as preventive measure,'' official told media.

As many as 19 people were tested positive positive in the rural areas of Guntur, officials informed adding that COVID-19 has claimed two lives so far in Guntur.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases have risen to 405 in the State and the pandemic has claimed six lives so far in AP. Highest number of cases 82 has been reported in Kurnool district, 75 cases in Guntur district and 48 cases have been reported in Nellore district. So far the official identified 134 localities as red zones across the State and enforcing the lockdown stringently.

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is reviewing the situation with the Chief Secretary, DGP and other officials here on Sunday. He directed the officials to distribute 16 crore masks in the state, three masks for each person.
