New Delhi, Mar 27 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of the success of Indian scientists in shooting down a live satellite by an anti-satellite missiles appears to have taken a political turn with Congress' senior leader Ahmed Patel's claim of the UPA government's role in it.

In an address to the nation on a short notice, the Prime Minister said an anti-satellite missile (A-SAT) has shot down a live satellite in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which is 300km away from the earth surface.

Giving credit to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with scientists, Patel, a close aid of Congress UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, tweeted: "The UPA government had initiated the ASAT program which has reached fruition today. I congratulate our space scientists & the visionary leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh."

The Congress-led UPA government led the country from 2004 to 2014.

What did Modi say?

"Our scientists have destroyed a live satellite in the LEO (Low Earth Orbit), 300 km away in space. This live satellite, which was a predetermined target, has been destroyed by anti-satellite missiles (A-SAT)," Modi said.

The operation's name was Mission Shakti.

"India has made an unprecedented achievement today. Today, India has registered its name as a 'Space Power'. So far, Russia, America and China had this status, now India also has achieved this," the Prime Minister said.
