New Delhi, Oct 20 (IBNS): True to the speculations, Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi on Thursday joined the BJP.

The veteran leader, who had been a prominent Congress leader, said she was joining the BJP in the interest of the nation as the Congress ship has already sunk with Rahul Gandhi calling shots.

BJP President Amit Shah was present at the programme in which Ms.Bahuguna Joshi, daughter of late Congress stalwart Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, announced her decision.

The 67-year-old leader said she felt it was time to stand behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is making sincere efforts to fight terrorism.

Bahuguna Joshi,  who was elected to the UP Assembly from Lucknow cantonment, said she had resigned as a legislator.

"I have sent my resignation letter to the UP Assembly Speaker," she said.

Bahuguna Joshi was said to be unhappy over the party's choice of Sheila Dikshit, the former Delhi Chief Minister, as the chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh.
