Cops can't harass militants' families: Mehbooba Mufti

Srinagar, Dec 30 (IBNS): Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday slammed the police for allegedly beating up the sister and other family members of a suspected militant.

Police beat up a woman named Rubina, the sister of a militant, along with her husband and brother in custody, Mehbooba claimed. "The severe nature of her injuries has left her bedridden," she tweeted.

Speaking to the media at Patipora Pulwama, she said: "If someone is a militant, what's the person's sister's fault?" she said.

"They stripped her and beat her up," she said.

"I want to tell the governor, if you have a fight with militants, do it with them but do not do this with their families. We will not let this happen," she said.

Jammu and Kashmir is under President's Rule now.

Mehbooba's visit to Pulwama is being seen as an attempt to consolidate her base before the Assembly elections in May 2019.
