Coronavirus scare: Kamakhya temple authorities shut doors for devotees

Guwahati/IBNS: As a precautionary measure to check spread of the deadly novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Kamakhya temple in Assam’s Guwahati shut doors for devotees.

The Kamakhya temple administration said the doors of the temple for devotees will be closed until further notice.

But daily rituals will be continued at the famous Kamakhya temple atop the Nilachal Hill.

Earlier, the temple administration had suspended daily ‘Bhog’ or midday meal and reduced the devotee entry in the temple to 50 percent.

Apart from the Kamakhya temple, the administration of Umananda temple – at the Peacock Island in the middle of river Brahmaputra in Guwahati, historical Billeswar temple in Nalbari district-have also decided to close the doors of the temple for devotees till Mar 31 in wake of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Several prominent temples of the state shut its doors for devotees till further orders.

Around 79,000 people were screened at the airports, railway stations, land ports and other places in the state so far and 839 people are under home isolation.

On the other hand, the Assam government has closed all Aadhaar Enrolment centres across the state up to Mar 31.
