Delhi declares Coronavirus epidemic, all schools, colleges, cinema halls to remain shut till Mar 31

New Delhi/IBNS: All schools, colleges and cinema halls will remain shut in the national capital till Mar 31 over the outbreak of the deadly Novel Coronavirus which was declared as an epidemic by the Delhi government on Thursday.

However, schools and colleges where examinations are underway will remain open.

Disinfecting all public places, government and private offices are made compulsory.

Following a review meeting, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, "The Delhi government is fully prepared to handle the situation.... I hope all people will cooperate with us in controlling the situation."

The total number of positive cases have reached 73 on Thursday. However, out of 73, three people from Kerala have recovered. 

Six positive cases have been reported in Delhi so far. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his government was vigilant about the present situation urging people not to panic.

Modi tweeted, "The Government is fully vigilant about the situation due to COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus. Across ministries & states, multiple steps have been proactively taken to ensure safety of all. These steps are wide-ranging, from suspension of Visas to augmenting healthcare capacities."

The Prime Minister said none of his ministers will travel abroad in upcoming days.

He tweeted, "Say No to Panic, Say Yes to Precautions. No Minister of the Central Government will travel abroad in the upcoming days. I urge our countrymen to also avoid non-essential travel. We can break the chain of spread and ensure safety of all by avoiding large gatherings."

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called the outbreak of the Coronavirus as "pandemic".

The Indian government on Wednesday suspended all visas, except the diplomatic, official, United Nations/International Organisations, employment and project ones, till Apr 15.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Parliament on Thursday called the Coronavirus outbreak a matter of concern.
