New Delhi, Dec 8 (IBNS) The Uber cab driver arrested for raping a woman passenger in Delhi was earlier too jailed in a rape case and apparently he was appointed without verification of his antecedents by the company, said media reports on Monday.

The Uber cab service driver, 32-year-old Shiv Kumar Yadav, was lodged in Tihar jail for seven months for a case of sexual assault in 2011, according to an NDTV report.

Police are investigating how the offender could make to the company Uber and appointed as a driver.

The police on Sunday arrested from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh the accused cab driver.

He would be produced in a court on Monday.

The woman has said in her statement to the police that she hS hired the cab and fell asleep in the vehicle.

The driver allegedly took her to a desolate location and raped her taking advantage of the situation.

He allegedly threatened the woman against reporting the incident.

An FIR was registered at the Sarai Rohilla police station in North Delhi.

To add on the shock, Uber, an international group which provides cab service all around the world, reportedly had no records of pick-up and drop.

The company has in a statement said: "We are deeply disturbed by the reported incident. Our thoughts are with the victim. We are actively and fully cooperating with authorities."

It said that "it is also our policy to immediately suspend a driver’s account following allegations of a serious incident, which we have done."

"Safety is Uber’s highest priority and in India, we work with licensed driver-partners to provide a safe transportation option, with layers of safeguards such as driver and vehicle information, and ETA-sharing to ensure there is accountability and traceability of all trips that occur on the Uber platform," said the company.
