According to STF sources, information was being circulated since several days that an inter-state gang of smugglers was selling narcotic substances in various parts of the state via Assam through Bhutan. The informants were asked to remain active to crackdown on the gang.

Sources said information related to a consignment of 'ganja' coming from Assam's Tinsukhiya district was received by the STF team on Monday.

Acting on the information, a truck stationed near the 'Sainik Dhaba' in the Khalilabad police station area of Santkabirnagar was raided.

The narcotic substance was seized from the driver of the truck identified as Kuldeep Singh, who is a resident of Koharka district in Punjab.

During interrogation, the accused said he had bought the contraband from one Kareem in Assam and it had to be handed over to one Pappu Pandit in Khalilabad, who is a resident of Azamgarh district.

The accused further confessed that he was paid Rs 20,000-25,000 for every consignment he delivered.

Further action against the accused is being taken under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
