Kolkata/IBNS: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday interrogated former West Bengal DGP, retired IPS Surajit Kar Purayakayastha, in connection with its ongoing probe into the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, officials said.

After being summoned by the ED, Purayakayastha appeared before the investigators at the Central probe agency's office in Kolkata's Salt Lake at around 11 am. and he was reportedly questioned for nearly two hours.

Earlier on Wednesday, acting on the Election Commission of India (ECI)'s direction, West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay ordered to keep the functions and powers of State Security Advisor (SSA) Surajit Kar Purayakayastha in abeyance with immediate effect till the end of Bengal assembly polls.

Surajit Kar Purakayastha had retired from his service as the state police's Director General (DGP) in 2018, and he was hand-picked by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the State Security Advisor, a newly created post.
