Kolhapur/IBNS: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday appealed to the people to maintain law and order saying cooperation was necessary from all sections of the society after tense protests took place in Kolhapur.

The erstwhile royal town of Kolhapur in Maharashtra has been tense after protests and a shutdown call was issued by some Hindu organisations over alleged praise of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and the Mysore King Tipu Sultan.

The Maharashtra CM said that he was in touch with Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

He warned that the government would not support anyone who tried to take law and order in hand.

Fadnavis, who is closely monitoring the situation, told the media: "There is no forgiveness in Maharashtra for those who praise Aurangzeb. Police are also taking action. At the same time, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that the people should also maintain peace, no untoward incident happens anywhere."

He said he has instructed the home department to take strict action against the culprits.

Meanwhile, district guardian minister Deepak Kesarkar said that a total of six people have been arrested in the objectionable status case.

Tight police security has been deployed in Kolhapur, particularly in some of the sensitive pockets.
