Nagpur: A Mumbai-Ranchi IndiGo flight had to make an unscheduled landing at Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur on Monday evening after an elderly passenger suffered a medical emergency, an official said on Tuesday.

The emergency landing followed a serious medical situation involving a 62-year-old male passenger, identified as Devanand Tiwari started vomiting blood on board at around 8 pm. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

After the passenger started vomiting blood, the pilot, who was in command, took the immediate call to land the aircraft at Nagpur.

The passenger was suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and tuberculosis, said Aejaz Shami, DGM, of Branding and Communications of KIMS Hospital, Nagpur.

The passenger was rushed to KIMS Hospital in Nagpur for medical treatment where he was declared brought dead. However, he succumbed to his illness, Shami said.

Further the body was sent to the Government Medical College and Hospitals (GMCH) for further medical procedures, Shami added.

“IndiGo flight 6E 5093, operating from Mumbai to Ranchi was diverted to Nagpur due to a medical emergency on board, in a statement," the IndiGo Airline said.

Following the necessary medical procedures and clearance, the flight successfully resumed its journey from Nagpur to Ranchi, it added.
