Srinagar/IBNS/UNI: A gunfight broke out between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district Tuesday night just hours after the Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Srinagar, officials said.

Shah, who is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, arrived in Srinagar after addressing a public rally at Rajouri and is scheduled to address another public meeting in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday.

Police said the gun battle erupted at village Drach in south Kashmir during a cordon and search operation in the area following an input about the presence of militants.

“As the joint team of forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering a gunfight,” a security official said.

“Encounter has started at Drach area in Shopian. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow," a Jammu and Kashmir Police tweet said.
