Ex-Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah to join BJP on Feb 22, confirms CM Himanta Sarma

Senior Assam politician Bhupen Borah, who recently quit the Congress Party ahead of the state elections, will join the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 22, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.

“Bhupen Borah has decided not to withdraw his resignation, and after our discussion, he has chosen to join the BJP,” Sarma told reporters.

Despite efforts by Rahul Gandhi and Congress state unit chief Gaurav Gogoi to convince him to reconsider, Borah stood by his decision following an hour-long meeting with Sarma.

Borah, who had been appointed to the top post of the Congress state unit in 2021, resigned after alleging he was sidelined and overruled.

In May last year, Gaurav Gogoi replaced him in the position. Although Borah was assigned the coalition committee, he claimed that all major decisions were being taken by Gogoi.

NDTV, quoting Sources close to Borah, said he felt humiliated by the party’s disregard for his contributions.

“The main reason is humiliation,” Borah told NDTV in an exclusive interview.

Sarma, who himself moved from Congress to BJP, expressed understanding, saying, “I have gone through the same pain that Bhupen Borah went through.”

He criticized the Congress leadership for failing to address Borah’s concerns, calling them “immature” and focused on appeasing a particular individual rather than retaining experienced leaders.
