Eyes on 2021 Bengal polls, Mamata Banerjee brings major reshuffle in TMC

Kolkata/IBNS: Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday brought a major reshuffle in her party, in a bid to regain the lost political ground in West Bengal and return to power for the third term in 2021.

Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal Chief Minister, has appointed a 21-member state coordination committee which will be steered by seven leaders of her party.

The seven members are Subrata Bakshi, Partha Chatterjee, Kalyan Banerjee, Suvendu Adhikari, Abhishek Banerjee, Firhad Hakim and Shanta Chhetri.

At the district levels too, the TMC chief brought fresh blood keeping the 2021 assembly elections in mind at a time the ruling party is rattled by the allegations of corruption in multiple sectors.

In a major change, former Indian cricketer and TMC MLA Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra have been appointed as the presidents of Howrah (urban) and Nadia districts respectively.

"I hope I will be able to perform my duties in the coming days successfully keeping everyone on board. The road ahead is very tough but I hope we all will work very hard for the next 9-10 months to help our party excel," Moitra said after getting appointed to the post.

TMC Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee will continue to lead the youth wing of Mamata's political outfit.

TMC, which had a dream political run since 2009 General Elections, had a setback in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls where the party's tally went down from 34 to 22.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the primary opposition to the TMC by bagging 18 of 42 Lok Sabha seats, the best ever performance of the saffron camp in the state which was once a Left bastion.
