Farmers storm Bhopal! Traffic crippled as protest over MSP intensifies

| @indiablooms | Jul 29, 2026, at 04:04 pm

Bhopal/IBNS: Traffic was disrupted while schools and colleges remained shut as protesting farmers marched into Madhya Pradesh's capital, Bhopal, after continuing their protest march overnight, according to media reports.

The farmers are demanding 100 percent procurement of moong (green gram) at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), along with several other agriculture-related reforms.

Clash With Police Amid March

Traffic movement was severely affected as clashes broke out between the protesters and the police after farmers breached barricades and climbed onto buses during their march.

The protesters, who said they were travelling with tractor-trolleys carrying ample food and drinking water, asserted that they would not return until their demands were met.

A heavy police deployment was made after the farmers announced on Tuesday that they would gherao the residence of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

The protesters were eventually stopped before the Veer Savarkar Bridge on Hoshangabad Road.

State Government Holds Talks

In an effort to defuse the situation, Madhya Pradesh Agriculture Minister Aidal Singh Kansana held a meeting with representatives of the protesting farmers at his office in Bhopal on Tuesday night.

However, no immediate breakthrough was reported.

What Are the Farmers Demanding?

The protesters have raised several demands related to procurement and agricultural reforms, including:

  • 100 percent procurement of the moong crop at the Minimum Support Price (MSP): Farmers say they have produced a bumper crop but the government has failed to procure the entire produce, forcing many to sell below MSP or leaving them without buyers.
  • Timely procurement and payments: They want the procurement process to be expedited and payments released without delay.
  • Relaxation of quality norms: Farmers allege that a large quantity of moong is being rejected under strict quality standards and have sought compensation or acceptance of the rejected produce.
  • Reforms to the e-token system for fertilisers: They want the existing e-token mechanism scrapped or overhauled, arguing that it delays and complicates access to fertilisers.
  • Broader agricultural reforms: Farmer organisations are also demanding policy changes aimed at improving procurement, farmer welfare and overall agricultural support in the state.

Protests Continue

The farmers have indicated that the agitation will continue until the state government accepts their demands, with the procurement of the entire moong crop at MSP remaining the central issue of the protest.
