Five top Gurkha militants arrested in Assam
Guwahati, Jan 12 (IBNS): Security forces on Monday arrested five hardcore militants belonging to United Gurkha People's Organisation (UGPO) including its three leaders in Assam's Baska and Udalguri district, police said.
Assam police IGP of BTAD LR Bisnoi said that, following a tip-off, Baska police had launched operation in various areas in BTAD and arrested the miltants.
The arrested militants were identified as, Surjya Ale Magar (C-in-C of UGPO), Lal Bahadur Tamang (Chairman), Suresh Ghimirey (Vice Chairman) Arjun Chetri alias Arjun Rimal (cadre) and Birkha Bahadur Limbu (Cadre of UGPO).
“The militants were took shelter in BTAD area and trying to spread out its base in the lower Assam,” Bisnoi said.
Earlier in the month of September in 2014, police had apprehended five extremists of the militant group and seized huge cache of arms and ammunition in possession from them.
On other hand, security forces had arrested at least 39 militants of NDFB(S) so far after the massacre in December last year during the operation against the militant group.
On December 23 in last year, NDFB(S) militants had killed at least 80 adivasi innocent people in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar district.
