Flood declared in J&K, 21 missing in house collapse
Srinagar, Mar 30 (IBNS): At least 21 people are feared missing while 10 were buried by mudslides as floods hit Kashmir following days of heavy rains.
According to reports, twenty one people are missing after a house collapsed in a landslide in the Laden village in Charar-e-Sharief area in Jammu & Kashmir.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has declared a flood situation as water levels crossed the danger mark in the river Jhelum late last night, causing panic among people.
All schools were closed on Monday and exams were postponed as the state government declared a flood. People in low lying areas have been asked to move to safer places.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is in touch with the state government of Jammu and Kashmir and is "closely monitoring the situation of increasing water levels in Jhelum River at Srinagar."
"No breach of embankment has been reported," a government statement said.
As a precautionary measure, to assist the state government authorities, two teams of NDRF have been deputed and another four teams kept stand-by.
The state government has been asked to indicate the assistance required by them.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took stock of the situation in Kashmir and deputed union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi to monitor relief operations.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra Monday spoke with state Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed who briefed him about the steps taken to deal with flood situation in the valley.
Vohra arrived in Srinagar on Monday morning on a three-day visit.
“Immediately after his arrival, the Governor spoke with Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Chief Minister, who briefed the Governor about the steps underway to timely deal with the situation arising from the incessant rains in the past days and the present level of Jhelum River," an official spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, reports said shikaras have been moved to various police stations for possible rescue operations if the flooding worsens.
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway continues to be closed for the third straight day due to landslides.
The Met Department has predicted more rain over the next six days.
