New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) In the midst of modest climb down in tension between India and Pakistan, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale began a three-day visit to the US on Monday wherein he would interact with senior representatives in the Trump administration and hold crucial talks on strategic and security related matters.

According to MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar, during his three-day visit, Mr Gokhale will meet with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale and Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Andrea Thompson.

"These are regular high-level dialogue mechanisms to review bilateral relations, exchange views on major foreign policy and security-related developments and coordinate respective positions on issues of common interest," he said in reply to questions.

During his visit, Foreign Secretary is also likely to meet with senior leaders in the US administration and the US Congress. ,

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after Pulwama terror attack killing CRPF personnel and Indian Air Force retaliated by undertaking an aerial attack near Balakot deep inside Pakistan on February 26.

Pakistan retaliated by attempting to target Indian military installations in the northern sector but the plans were thwarted.

Top US officials and members of the Congress have expressed concern over the manner Pakistan has handled the issue of terror and urged Islamabad to take concrete steps to destroy terror financing and terror infrastructures operating against India in that country.
