Fresh protests in Karnataka over Cauvery water, Bengaluru under prohibitory orders

| | Sep 12, 2016, at 08:34 pm
Bengaluru, Sept 12 (IBNS) Prohibitory orders were imposed in Bengaluru as fresh violence erupted in Karnataka over the Cauvery water issue even as the Supreme Court modified its earlier order, asking the state to release lesser amount of water to Tamil Nadu.

Reports said fresh protests took place in Bengaluru while vehicles were set ablaze in Mysuru leading to suspension of bus service to Tamil Nadu.

There was total chaos on Mysuru Road and later in the afternoon, section 144 (Prohibitory Orders) were put in place in the city.

Private schools in the city intimated the parents to take home their wards.

Some schools engaged additional teachers to ensure that children reached their home safely.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court  modified its last week's order, asking the Karnataka  Government to release to Tamil Nadu 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water-  3,000 cusecs less than what was directed last week-daily till September 20.

Karnataka had made a plea with the  court to suspend its order to release 15,000 cusecs of water.

The state Government had claimed that Tamil Nadu's claim of a water crisis is "false" and that Karnataka is not in a position to release water.

Ever since the top court had ordered release of 15,000 cusecs of water every day, protests broke out in different parts of Karnataka taking the relation between the two neighbouring states to a new low.

On Monday morning, the Woodlands hotel in Chennai was attacked allegedly by a fringe Tamil group, who hurled petrol bombs, damaing  glass panes and windows.

The group also allegedly left pamphlets warning of retaliation if Tamils were targeted in Karnataka.

The attack is being seen as a retaliation to a Tamil engineering student being thrashed in Bengaluru on Sunday allegedly for making derogatory comments on Kannada actors and also commenting on the Cauvery dispute.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appealed to social media users to not support any hate campaign.

On Friday, a statewide shutdown left life paralysed in Karnataka.
