Goa MLA Monserrate granted bail

| | May 18, 2016, at 11:02 pm
Panaji, May 18 (IBNS) The Goa Children's Court on Wednesday granted bail to Atanasio Babush Monserrate, a former Goa Congress leader and now an Independent MLA, accused of allegedly raping a minor girl and of human trafficking, according to media reports.

He surrendered to the Ribandar crime branch in Goa on May 5 after a case was registered against him on May 4.

It has been reported that in her complaint, the girl has alleged that Monserrate raped her on more than one occasion after he employed her in a lifestyle store owned by him a few weeks back.

The Goa lawmaker, on May 4, had denied the charges and said it was a conspiracy against him, according to local reports. He said he had employed the girl after her mother and aunt had approached him for employment.

The girl’s mother, who allegedly sold the girl to the MLA for Rs. 50 lakh, and her accomplice, who reportedly brokered the deal, were also arrested later. They have also been granted bail on Wednesday.
