Goa Police files murder case in BJP leader Sonali Phogat's death; post mortem reveals multiple 'blunt injuries'

The Goa Police has registered a murder case under section 302 of IPC in connection with the probe of BJP leader Sonali Phogat's death following the complaint made by Phogat's family, according to media reports.

Her autopsy, conducted today, revealed multiple 'blunt injuries', the reports added.

Phogat's family had demanded that the post mortem be conducted at AIIMS, New Delhi but agreed to one in Goa after police filed a murder case.

The family gave consent to post mortem as their lawyers and doctors suggested that the body would degrade further after 72 hours, her nephew Mohinder Phogat told India Today, adding that they have been assured that a panel of doctors would look into the procedure and it would also be videographed.

Sonali Phogat was brought dead on August 23 to the St Anthony Hospital at Anjuna in North Goa at around 9 am in the morning.

Her family questioned the initial reports that said she died of cardiac arrest.

Both her brother and sister have told the media that Sonali felt uneasy and told them that something was mixed in her food when she spoke to her mother, sister and brother-in-law a few hours before her death.

Sonali Phogat's personal assistant Sudhir Sangwan and his friend Sukhwinder Wasi, who accompanied her when she arrived in Goa on Monday, have been charged, stated an NDTV report.

Her brother Rinku Dhaka filed a complaint alleging that his sister was raped by Sudhir Sangwan and Sukhwinder three years ago, and she was being blackmailed with an explicit video. He also alleged that they murdered her, and demanded their arrest.

He also alleged that the duo had threatened to ruin his sister's future in politics and acting. They had seized her phones, property records, ATM cards, and house keys, the report said.

Further, CCTV cameras, laptops and other gadgets have gone missing from Sonali's farmhouse in Haryana after her death, said the report.

Sonali Phogat has a 15-year-old daughter, and her husband died in 2016.

She rose to fame with a Tik Tok video and also appeared in the reality show Bigg Boss in 2020.

She contested the Haryana elections as a BJP candidate but lost to then Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi, who later joined BJP.

Her daughter has also demanded justice for her mother.
