Gujarat: Congress MLA Jignesh Mewani sentenced to 6 months jail term in 2016 case

An Ahmedabad court on Friday sentenced Congress's Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mewani and 18 others to six months in jail in connection with a 2016 case, media reports said.

The case pertains to 2016 protests launched by Mewani and others to rename Gujarat University’s Law Bhavan building after BR Ambedkar, reported India Today.

A total of 20 people were arrested in the case. While one of them dies, the others were sentenced to six months imprisonment.

Earlier this week, Jignesh Mewani was attacked during a public meeting.

His team claimed in a tweet that the attack was carried out by goons at the behest of former state home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja.
