Hammer throw accident: 3 sports teachers held
Kottayam/UNI: Police recorded the arrest of three sports teachers in connection with the hammer throw accident that resulted in the death of a student in Pala.
The trio had been identified as Muhammad Kasim (referee), T D Martin (throw judge) and K V Joseph (signalling official), police sources said on Monday.
They surrendered at the police station, Pala and were released on bail.
Another official Narayanankutty who was also named as an accused in the case is yet to be arrested.
Police have registered an unintentional murder case against the four. The trio surrendered after police submitted a report in the court naming all four as accused.
Apheel Johnson (17), a student of St Thomas Higher Secondary School in Pala, was a volunteer at the State Junior Athletic Meet held in Pala.
He was struck on the head by a flying hammer, weighing about three kg, thrown by a competitor on October four around noon.
Apheel was taken to the Medical College Hospital here where he underwent an emergency surgery. However, he remained critical and died on October 21.
