Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has confiscated 16 kg of heroin worth more than Rs 100 crore at Mumbai airport and arrested a passenger and a Ghanaian woman in this connection, media reports said.

The Mumbai unit of DRI had laid a trap at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Tuesday based on a tip-off about a man arriving in Mumbai from Malawi, an African country, via Qatar was trying to smuggle narcotic substance into India, a report in the media said quoting an official.

Officers of a tracking and surveillance team of DRI were positioned at the airport as part of the trap and intercepted a suspected passenger, the official said.

The passenger was searched and 16 kg heroin, concealed in cavities made in the trolley bags, was recovered, the official added.

The value of the seized heroin is more than Rs 100 crore in the international market, the official said, according to the report.

The arrested passenger has been remanded to DRI custody by a local court.

The woman from Ghana was arrested from a hotel in Delhi as part of DRI's action follow-up action in the case.

She was nabbed when she came to take the delivery of the smuggled contraband in Delhi and is being brought to Mumbai on transit remand granted by a court in Delhi.

Further investigation is underway, the official said, the report added.
