Srinagar/UNI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah virtually flagged off the Srinagar-Sharjah flight from Srinagar on Saturday.

"We declare it open from today. This will help in boosting tourism and bring more investment in the Union Territory," Shah said.

The first flight took off from Srinagar at around 6.20 pm and is expected to reach Sharjah at around 10 pm.

The operation of the first international flight is seen as a major boost to tourism, trade, and industry as well as Kashmiri travellers who are working in the Middle East.

Shah also met the families of civilians and security personnel killed in recent attacks in Kashmir at Raj Bhawan.

The Home Minister is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Shah is likely to address a public rally in Jammu on Sunday.
