HS Brahma says no exit poll before May 16, EC clarifies

| | May 10, 2014, at 01:50 am
New Delhi, May 9 (IBNS): A confusion has cropped up regarding the telecast of exit polls after voting ends on May 12 for all the 543 Lok Sabha seats, with Election Commissioner HS Brahma earlier saying that exit polls cannot be telecast till May 16.
However, the Election Commission (EC) later clarified that the exit polls can be telecast on May 12 after 6.30 pm.

"Exit poll is prohibited till half an hour after closing of the poll on May 12 (the last day of the nine-phased polling)," the Election Commission said in a statement on Friday.

Earlier, HS Brahma said the exit polls cannot be telecast before May 16.

"You are not supposed to conduct exit polls before May 16th, the counting day. We will not allow you to open your mouth before 16th evening," he said during an interaction with Indian Women Press Corps in New Delhi.

"On the evening of 16th you can openly telecast the exit polls. Exit poll is only after counting. What is the hurry? Hardly, there are 150 hours (between May 12 and May 16)," he said.
