Hyderabad's drunken driving accident leads to bar licence cancellations

| | Jul 19, 2016, at 07:22 pm
Hyderabad, Jul 19 (IBNS): The Excise department has cancelled the licence of three bars in Hyderabad, including that of Thank God It's Friday (TGIF), for selling liquor to a group of students, one of whose drunk driving led to three death, the media reported on Tuesday.
The accident occurred on July 1.

TGIF, located in the tony Banjara Hill, has been accused of serving liquor to engineering student K Shravil and his friends, who were allegedly under the legally permitted age of 21 years. Shravil, who was driving,  hit a road divider and then rammed into another vehicle, which led to the death of three people from the same family, media reported.

The department had first issued a show-cause notice to TGIF. But as TGIF failed to give a satisfactory reply, the department cancelled the licence.

P. Rajesh, 35, who was driving the other car, died on the spot. His niece, Ramya, 10, was on life support for nearly 10 days before succumbing to injuries. On Monday, Rajesh's father P Madhusudanachary also succumbed to his injuries.

The police have said that if underage students are caught drinking in bars or pubs, their schools and colleges will be informed. The police have also said that even those drinking legally are caught driving under the influence of alcohol, their workplaces will be informed, the media reported.

Telangana's excise department too has stepped up its drive against bars and pubs serving liquor to underage customers.
