New Delhi, Mar 21 (IBNS): Welcoming the arrest of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi in the United Kingdom (UK), the Ministry of External Affairs said India is continuing to follow up the development with the concerned authorities in the UK.

In a statement, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said: "We welcome the fact that Nirav Modi has been arrested by the United Kingdom authorities pursuant to the arrest warrant issued by the Westminster Magistrate Court.

Government of India continues to actively follow up this matter with the authorities concerned in the UK, with a view to have Nirav Modi extradited to India at the earliest."

Nirav Modi accused in PNB scam:

Diamond czar Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are the prime accused in the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank scam involving fake guarantees in the name of the state-run lender to secure loans overseas.

Modi and his uncle Choksi left country in 2018 before the CBI registered a case against him.

Nirav Modi arrested in the UK:

He was arrested on Tuesday following the arrest warrants by the Westminster court.

After the UK court denied his bail, Modi will need to stay in prison till Mar 29 when the next hearing in the case will take place.

The arrest of the businessman took place at a time when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is taking all necessary steps to expedite the extradition process of Modi.

The billionaire diamond merchant was spotted by media in London for the second time this month.

Modi's response to the media's questions remained the same, that being: "No comments."
