New Delhi/IBNS: India on Wednesday reported over 54,000 new Covid-19 cases, eight thousand more than the figure that was registered a day ago, taking the tally of infections to touch 76.5 lakh.

The country in the last 24 hours reported 54,044 new infections while 717 people, who were infected with the virus, died in the same span of time.

1,15,914 people have so far died due to Novel Coronavirus in the country since late January, when the first Covid-19 case was reported.

India's Covid-19 daily cases have been declining for the last several weeks after reaching over 90,000 in September.

Despite the steady dip in cases and increase in reoveries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his national address on Tuesday asked 1.3 billion people of his country to keep following all the necessary steps to stem the spread of Coronavirus as the battle against the virus is not over yet.

Alerting citizens, Modi said, "You all must remember that lockdown might be over but the virus is still there."

"If you step out without a mask, you put your families at risk," he added.
