IPS officer Rina Mitra appointed as principal adviser to Bengal govt
New Delhi, Feb 13 (IBNS): The Mamata Banerjee government has appointed Rina Mitra, a 1983-batch IPS Officer, as its principal adviser (internal security).
Mitra, who retired on Jan 31, was a Madhya Pradesh cadre officer and batch mate of CBI director Rishi Kumar Shukla.
She had recently lost out in the race for the post of CBI director.
A notification in regard of Mitra's appointment will be soon issued by the government.
The same will contain the terms and conditions of her service.
Confirming her appointment, Mitra told Economic Times: “ It is like homecoming.”
The move is seen as a tactical one by the Bengal government as Mamata Banerjee recently locked horns with the CBI.
On Feb 3 (Sunday), a face-off between the Kolkata Police and CBI began after the premier investigation agency's officers went to Rajeev Kumar's bungalow in south Kolkata's Loudon Street area as the CP skipped three previous summons and city cops manhandled CBI investigators and forcibly detained them.
Following the incident, Mamata Banerjee sat on a two-day 'political' dharna (sit-in-demonstration) and other leaders of the opposition-alliance either joined the dharna or expressed their support over phone.
