Jadavpur University bans alcohol on premises, enforces valid ID cards for entry after student's death

Kolkata/IBNS: Days after the death of a first-year undergraduate student on the campus from alleged ragging in the hostel, Jadavpur University Thursday issued an order announcing new rules that would come into effect immediately.

The university said that anyone who wants to enter the premises will have to show a valid ID issued by Jadavpur University.

The use of alcohol has also been completely banned on campus.

The rules mentioned in Jadavpur University’s order are:

  • Anyone who wants to enter the campus between 8pm to 7am will have to show a valid ID card issued by Jadavpur University.
  • In the absence of a university-issued ID card, the individual will have to show valid proof of identity and also provide details of the person he/she is going to meet.
  • Vehicles, two wheelers or four wheelers, must have JU stickers issued by the university.
  • Use of narcotics and alcohol has been prohibited on Jadavpur University campus.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has also formed a fact-finding committee to identify the administrative and infrastructural lapses at Jadavpur University that led to the incident.

The committee will function with immediate effect and submit its report to the Higher Education Department within two weeks.

The committee will also ensure corrective measures for implementation to prevent any such untoward incidents in the future, a government statement said.

Police have arrested six students so far in connection with the death of the first-year student last week.

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose earlier also summoned the JU officials later at his Raj Bhavan office.

The police first arrested a 2022 passed-out student and two 2nd year students in connection with the death of the 18-year-old undergraduate student, who allegedly fell fatally from the hostel's 2nd floor on August 9 and succumbed at a hospital the following morning.

The JU currently has no Vice-Chancellor after former VC Suranjan Das resigned in March last owing to his discontent regarding the lack of a security system at the large campus, whose gates remain open 24 hours.
