The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday passed a resolution expressing shock and anguish over the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam town that left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead.

The resolution was passed during a special one-day session of the assembly called in the wake of the recent terror strike that drew worldwide condemnation.

The Assembly members resolved to fight and defeat the nefarious designs of disturbing communal harmony and hindering progress, media reports said.

The resolution was moved by UT's Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary.

“The Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir reaffirms its unwavering commitment to foster an environment of peace, development, and inclusive prosperity for all its citizens, and to resolutely defeat the nefarious designs of those who seek to disturb the communal harmony and progress of the nation and of Jammu and Kashmir,” the resolution stated as quoted by Kashmir Observer.

Quoting the resolution, Choudhary said, “Such acts of terror are a direct assault on the ethos of Kashmiriyat, the values enshrined in our Constitution, and the spirit of unity, peace, and harmony that have long characterized Jammu and Kashmir and our nation.”

The resolution demanded that the states and Union Territories ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of Kashmiri students and citizens residing or travelling there.

“This House calls upon all political parties, religious and community leaders, youth organizations, civil society groups, and media houses across the nation to maintain calm, reject violence and divisive rhetoric, and work collectively to uphold peace, unity, and constitutional values,” the resolution said.

Pahalgam terror attack

Twenty-six tourists including 23 Hindus died after terrorists identified them as non-Muslims and gunned them down at Baisaran meadows, a popular destination in Pahalgam.

World leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, condemned the attack.

The Modi government has taken tit-for-tat diplomatic steps against Pakistan, suspending the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari-Wagah border with an immediate effect, cancelling Pakistani visas under SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, asking the Pakistani advisors to leave India within a week and reducing the overall strength of High Commissions to 30 from the existing 55 effective from May 1, 2025.
