Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar city observed a shutdown on Friday to protest against the recent comments made on Prophet Mohammed by a former BJP leader that triggered a row.

Shops and business establishments remained closed in Srinagar’s city centre as well as the old city, officials and witnesses told UNI.

A few two-wheelers besides a small number of cabs and auto-rickshaws were seen in the main Civil Lines area and other roads.

The normal hustle bustle on the roads was missing.

Interestingly, no group in Kashmir called for a shutdown on Friday.

According to the managing body of the historical Jamia mosque, the authorities decided not to allow Friday congregational prayers at the mosque.

BJP leader Nupur Sharma, who has now been removed, triggered a row with her remark on Prophet and event it drew  furious reactions and official protests from at least 15 nations.
