Jantar Mantar Protest: Cops remove Sonam Wangchuk from protest site, admitted to hospital

Wangchuk has been fasting to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak.

In a post on X, Delhi Police said: "As per orders of Hon'ble High Court and on expert medical advice due to the deteriorating health condition of Sh. Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care."

The police further said, "While complying with the orders of Hon'ble High Court, the protestors tried to create obstruction, in which slight commotion ensued. However, police exercised maximum restraint and carried out the exercise safely."

Wangchuk was taken away from the protest site amid sloganeering by activists of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), the organisation leading the agitation. Police also asked the protesters to vacate the venue.

The activist began his indefinite fast on June 28 as part of a broader protest spearheaded by the CJP, which has been demonstrating at Jantar Mantar for more than 25 days while demanding Pradhan's resignation over the alleged examination scandal.

The group has also announced a "Chalo Sansad" march to Parliament on July 20, coinciding with the opening day of the Monsoon Session.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast, saying the country needed him "alive, active and engaged."

SCBA President Vikas Singh personally visited Jantar Mantar on Thursday and handed over a letter urging the activist to safeguard his health.

Separately, the Delhi High Court directed the authorities to conduct daily medical monitoring of Wangchuk and ensure he receives timely medical treatment whenever necessary.
