Srinagar/IBNS: Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sheikh Wasim Bari, his father and brother were killed by terrorists on Wednesday night in the union territory's Bandipore district, police said. The tragedy apparently occurred owing to a security lapse by the cops who were responsible for his protection.

Terrorists resorted to indiscriminate firing on the trio, who were sitting at a shop, injuring them grievously. They were shifted to a hospital but all succumbed to their injuries.

In a tweet, J&K Police said: "Terrorists fired upon BJP worker Wasim Bari at Bandipora. During indiscriminate firing Wasim Bari, his father Bashir Ahmad and his brother Umer Bashir got injured and (were) shifted to hospital, but unfortunately all three succumbed to their injuries."

Meanwhile, media reports said, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken eight cops in custody following the terror attack on the BJP leader and his family.

The cops taken in custody were  personal security officers (PSOs) to Sheikh Waseem Bari.

Sheikh Wasim was a BJP district president. He along with his father and brother was sitting at a shop when the terrorists opened fire.

None of the policemen, deployed to provide security to Wasim, were present during the attack.

The J&K Police earlier said that the personal security officers (PSOs) will be arrested for dereliction of duty. Later reports said they were arrested.

Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav expressed shock at the killing.

"Shocked and saddened by the killing of young BJP leader Wasim Bari and his brother by terrorists in Bandipora. This despite 8 security commandos. Condolences to the family," he tweeted, mentioning that Wasim's father was also a BJP "senior leader".

President of Jammu and Kashmir Workers Party Mir Junaid condemned the murders and said a family who begged to differ from a "toxic ideology of terror was killed for having a voice."

"Those killing civilians in the name of God, nation, freedom, are all the real persecutors of this land. Today a family who begged to differ from a toxic ideology of terror was killed for having a voice. Down with terror, shame on terrorism @hussain_imtiyaz @HMOIndia @PMOIndia," Junaid tweeted.
