Journalists waiting for Kunal Ghosh outside hospital were "lathicharged" by police

Kolkata, Nov 15 (IBNS): Journalists who went to click photos of suspended Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh, who has been admitted in Kolkata's SSKM hospital following suicide attempt inside prison, were lathicharged by the police on Saturday.

Ghosh allegedly tried to commit suicide inside the prison during late Thursday night.

He was later shifted to state-run SSKM hospital for treatment, where he was kept in Critical Care Unit (CCU) under observation.

According to TV reports, when Ghosh was being taken from the CCU to adjacent Bangur Institute of Neurology (BIN) for an Electroencephalography (EEG) test on Saturday morning, he told the dozens of reporters gathered there that the real culprits of the Saradha scam must be arrested.

“Ask them to first arrest those who are 'guilty',” Ghosh reportedly said waiting journos on the way for the test.

The clash occurred around 1:15 pm when Ghosh was being brought back to the hospital after the tests.

It has been learnt that journalists were waiting to take fresh pictures of Ghosh and talk to him if possible.

This time police lathicharged the mediapersons away and shoved Ghosh inside the building.

It has been learnt that many media persons sustained injuries during the melee with the police personnel.

On Friday, Ghosh allegedly attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills and then informed the Jail officials.

He reportedly told the Jail offcials that he took 58 'Alprazolam' sleeping pills, though medical reports claimed, he didn't took that many pills.

He was admitted in hospital after that where the doctors had his stomach washed.

He had threatened in a court on Monday that he would commit suicide if the “real culprits” of the Saradha scam are not arrested.

After the attempted suicide, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday suspended officials in this connection.

Jail Superintendent, the doctor who was attending Ghosh as well as the officer on duty at the jail ward were suspended.

She he also ordered to set up a special committee to probe the entire episode.

Ghosh was in Kolkata’s Presidency Jail since he was arrested in November last year in connection with the ponzi scam.

He is one of the key accused in the multi-crore Saradha Group chit fund scam.

A journalist by profession, Ghosh was the CEO of Saradha Group’s media operations.

Ghosh has been named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its first chargesheet in the multi-crore scam along with Saradha chief Sen and close aide Debjani Mukherjee.

As a matter of fact, he was the only Trinamool leader who was named in the CBI in its first charge sheet in connection with the Saradha ponzi case.
