Srinagar/UNI: Hours after a gunfight that left three militants dead, a fresh gunfight erupted in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

The fresh gunfight broke out in Feeripora area of Shopian when joint teams were conducting a cordon and a search operation in the area.

“As the joint team cordoned the suspected area, the hiding militants fired upon the police and forces which retaliated, engaging in an encounter,” a police officer said.

The exchange of fire is on in the area.

This is the fourth encounter in Kashmir in the last 30 hours.

Five militants -- three from Shopian, one each in Anantnag and Bandipora, were killed in earlier three gun fights since Monday morning.

Three militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba, including one who was allegedly involved in the killing of a street hawker from Bihar, were killed in an overnight gunfight in Shopian district.

Security forces have stepped up operations against the militants after the recent spree of civilian killings that has triggered panic among the minorities in Kashmir.
