Kashmir receives fresh snowfall

Srinagar, Jan 22 (IBNS): Most parts of the Kashmir valley received fresh overnight snowfall leading to closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway for vehicular movement.
Metrological officials in Srinagar said that Qazigund received 2.3 centimeter (cm) of snow, Pahalgam 7 cm, Kupwara 2 cm, Kokernag, 2 cm and Gulmarg 50 cm.
 
It is however welcomes as fresh snowfall attracts the tourists in good numbers in
Gulmarg, an official said. 
 
In fact, large number of tourists visited the Gulmarg on Thursday.
 
Reports reaching IBNS said that due to heavy snowfall,  the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed for traffic and there was heavy landslides on the road.
 
According to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Traffic, J&K, Jammu one way movement of traffic will be in force on Jammu- Srinagar-National Highway (NHW-1A) with effect from Friday till further orders, an official statement said.
 
"This has been necessitated in view of slippery conditions of NHW-1A coupled with rain, snowfall, poor road condition and triggering of landslides in Jawahar Tunnel-Lower Munda, Jawahar Tunnel-Banihal, Ramsoo-Ramban and Patnitop sectors," it said.
 
"Light to Moderate Rain / Snow would occur at few places over the state in next 24 hours," the MeT department said.
