Kashmir: State govt orders closure of WiMAX services

Srinagar, Oct 10 (IBNS): As Kashmir continues to remain on the edge with no let up in the protests, injuries and killings, government seems to be stuck with experimenting of mobile phone and internet connectivity believing that it may end the stalemate in the valley.

The new experiment comes in the form of shutting down the wireless broadband service (WiMAX) offered by state owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

WiMAX is a unique technology deployed by BSNL.

This technology provides fixed as well as fully mobile high speed broadband connectivity along with roaming feature.

In the absence of mobile internet facility, the valley is already reeling under information blockade and the ban on wireless broadband
services has added to the woe of people.

Students and job aspirants are worst hit due to the internet ban in the valley.

“On government directions we stopped the WiMAX Services in the valley since Friday, till further orders,” Said senior BSNL official in Srinagar.

The communication gag ensured following the killing of Hizb Leader Burhan Wani along with two associates in Bamdoora village of Kokernag area in South Kashmir on July 8.

Unrest claimed the lives of over 90 civilians, mostly teens, including that of two policemen and left thousands injured in clashes between protesters and security forces.
