New Delhi, Aug 11 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday expressed his sadness over the havoc caused in Kerala due to incessant rainfall in the past few days.

He urged his party members to help distressed people of the state.

Gandhi tweeted: "Unprecedented rainfall has created havoc in Kerala, destroying property & forcing thousands to abandon their homes. I urge each and every Congres worker in Kerala to step up & help those in need. My prayers & thoughts are with the people of Kerala in this difficult time."

Meanwhile, in a bid to give some relief to the people of the flood-hit state, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday announced ex-gratia payment of Rs four lakh each to the kin of those who lost their lives in the deluge.

He also tweeted: "Contributed ₹1 lakh to CMDRF. Our State is facing an unprecedented crisis due to the floods. Rebuilding affected areas is a Herculean task. I urge all of you to contribute generously to relief efforts."

At least 27 people have lost their lives in the state so far.
