Kolkata, Jan 31 (IBNS): The body of a two-year-old girl was recovered from a canal at the north-west side of Gangasagar Mela Ground under Maidan Police Station limits in central Kolkata on Wednesday midnight, reports said on Thursday.

According to reports, some hawkers spotted the body in a canal near Babughat at Maidan area and informed the police.

Local police said that the girl lived with her parents on a pavement near Eden Gardens and had gone missing on Wednesday morning.

"We are suspecting the girl was murdered as we found multiple injury marks on her head and other parts of body," a police official told IBNS.

"Registering an abduction-and-murder case against unknown killer(s), officials of local Maidan Police Station and investigators from city police's homicide department have begun probe into the matter," the officer said.

"Our officers are quizzing the locals and examining nearby areas' CCTV footage to get a clear idea about the matter, and our investigators on Thursday morning collected clues from the crime scene," he added.

The baby girl's body has been sent for post-mortem.
