Koregaon-Bhima case: Accused Dalit scholar and activist arrested in Mumbai

Mumbai, Feb 2 (IBNS): Dalit scholar and activist, Anand Teltumbde, who is an accused in the violence which broke out in Koregaon-Bhima in Maharashtra early 2018, was arrested at Mumbai airport on Saturday morning.

Teltumbde was arrested from the domestic terminal of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport by Pune police. He was arrested at around 3:30 am.

The accused, who is a professor at Goa Institute of Management, is likely to be produced later in the day.

The Pune sessions court on Friday denied Teltumbde a pre-arrest bail citing enough material proving his alleged link with the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and with Elgar Parishad.

However, Teltumbde's lawyer called the arrest as "illegal".

"The Supreme Court in its January 11th order had given Anand Teltumbde a relief of four weeks which means he could not be arrested till February 11th, but still the arrest has been made. Will also inform the court about this order," Rohan Nahar, lawyer of Teltumbde, has been quoted by NDTV.

Other activists who are accused in the case are Varavara Rao, lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Fereira, Gautam Navlakha and Vernon Gonsalves.
