Thane/UNI: A 22-year-old youth was booked under IPC Section 269 for allegedly dumping around 25,000 used masks at a public place in Purna village of Bhiwandi town, police said here on Monday.

The accused has been identified as Imran Shaikh, they said.

Since the past two days, the news channels were airing the story that used masks, which pose serious health hazard, were piled up at a godown in Bhiwandi.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, District Health Officer (DHO) Manish Renge directed the police, FDA and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), to inspect the godown.

Meanwhile, the accused dumped the huge stash of masks in the open, which was again aired on the news channels.

Talking to UNI, Dr Renge said that MPCB has been directed to destroy these one-time use masks by following the standard operating procedure.

However, no arrests have been made in the case yet, Narpoli Police Station senior Inspector Maloji Shinde said here, adding that the hunt is on for the accused and he will be arrested soon.
